Era entrato nell\u2019ordine benedettino nel 1961. Nel suo periodo di formazione aveva studiato oltre che filosofia e teologia a Roma, anche zoologia, chimica inorganica e storia dell&#8217;astronomia a Monaco (al Pontificio Ateneo Sant\u2019Anselmo insegn\u00f2 dal 1971 al 1978 filosofia della scienza).
